That's a serious escalation. But it's more-or-less exactly what I predicted as his effort to end the war with his gains intact.

I think the nuclear war bit's a bluff. He's trying to scare people into accepting the new status quo. I don't think this changes anything for Ukraine, whose country he is attempting to steal. They have faced this risk all along.

BREAKING: Putin announces partial mobilization of Russian military, signals plan to annex occupied areas of Ukraine and threatens nuclear retaliation
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of his country’s military Wednesday, a significant escalation of his war in Ukraine after a series of setbacks that led to growing pressure on the Kremlin to act.

In a rare national address, the Russian leader also signaled the Kremlin planned to annex occupied areas of southern and eastern Ukraine and threatened nuclear retaliation if Kyiv continues its efforts to reclaim that land in the war.

Speaking after Putin, defense minister Sergei Shoigu said an initial 300,000 reservists would be called up.

Only Russian citizens who are currently in reserve and have previous military experience will be subject to mobilization, Putin said. Those called up will also undergo additional training, he added, with the mobilization starting immediately.
