Under imperial British law, you'd have had to pay them the market rate.

The sad thing is, at the time, Britain had surplus labour and an inadequate supply of land, while the US had plenty of empty land but insufficient numbers of labourers.

It isn't hard to figure how the problem in both countries might have been solved.

I think American plantation owners got greedy. Your founders included.
