Fiz > But that is not a test of the current contenders of Fascism vs. Socialism.

Fascism versus socialism? The end result of both is a draconian dictatorship.

Is America 'Capitalist' ? Not like it used to be. As De pointed out a post or two ago 'We' have 'over-regulated' things to the point of absurdity.

On the other hand, I still have a choice of fast food joints - MacDonald's, Hardee's, Wendy's, Burger King . . .

And in the grocery stores I still have multiple choices as to what brand and flavor of bread to buy.

Fiz > And it is actually hard to find a government which is not a blend of Fascist *and* Socialist right now.

True enough.
But do not forget what 'they' call Communist. China appears to have a communist dictatorship which has unleashed enough 'capitalism' that it is now the second largest economy on this planet.

Fiz > EVERYTHING mathematical/logical about efficiency/benefits of free markets hinges on Ricardo's premises.

I never heard of this 'Ricardo' fella . . .
But I have heard of Adam Smith and I can work out in my mind how his 'invisible hand' works. And there is nothing 'mathematical' about it. Also not much logic per-se to it either. Supply and Demand make for a starting point . . . then the customers wants and willingness versus what the suppliers can and are willing to provide. . . Kind of like 'climate models'. It is easy to say I got a 'mathematical model' which will predict what is going to happen next . . . But reality has a habit of breaking such models.

Yes, Zim, I know that. Communism works well for ANTS and BEES, not for humans. That experiment was such a blowout that even totalitarians don't want to get tainted with the broad brush label of "communist".

But that is not a test of the current contenders of Fascism vs. Socialism. And it is actually hard to find a government which is not a blend of Fascist *and* Socialist right now. So it is hard to test "capitalism" vs. socialism, I would say, in the US. The US is *not* anything remotely close to Adam Smith's ideal. And it is *absolutely* not in compliance with Ricardo's Theory of Comparative Advantage.

You may not like it (I don't like it either), but the US is arguably LESS capitalist than China...and ABSOLUTELY less capitalist than what I saw in Russia 12 years ago, and in several other other countries right now.

You need to start with definitions -- not propaganda. It is only propaganda which supports the idea that the US is actually even close to "laissez-faire" capitalist any more. The markets are not free. EVERYTHING mathematical/logical about efficiency/benefits of free markets hinges on Ricardo's premises.
