The Russian Defense Ministry says its troops are withdrawing from the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman “due to the threat of encirclement” — a day after the Kremlin illegally annexed that region.

Ukrainian forces had surrounded thousands of Russian troops in the Donetsk region’s city after moving on the transport hub overnight, after the Kremlin hosted an elaborate ceremony and pop concert celebrating its annexation of Ukrainian territory.

Russia’s land seizure has drawn forceful rebuke from Western countries and the United Nations. In Zaporizhzhia, another of the four annexed regions, the International Atomic Energy Agency said the head of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant had been “temporarily detained to answer questions.”

Reports suggest Lyman may have now been captured. Not sure if they are reliable. But if I was encircled as the Russians are, and my commanders had left me to die, why would I fight? I'd surrender and count myself lucky.
