"It seems to me that before it gets to that, things will have be a whole lot worse than they are today.
...
I imagine that whoever controls the military is going to "take" the country. Not regions of it, but the whole thing."
Yes, of course things will have to be a whole lot worse than currently. But there is a significant space between a "whole lot worse" and full-on, probably door to door, civil war.
And no single person is likely to control "the military" once we get to "a whole lot worse". People in the military are individuals who may speak the same language, but ultimately they are individuals -- who come from different regions, faiths, belief-systems, skills, and loyalties.
I expect there are more people OUT of the military, by far, than remaining in. Yes, I hear the DemonRats are attmpting to ID and purge those they don't think are evil enough, but that is part of what is going to eventually force something else.
I'm just saying it would be "nice" if we could just agree to become "un-united" in a civilized manner. I also think that is the more practical solution vs. a full-on food fight to the last man. And a fight WOULD likely be to the last man, because it is not as though the combatants will mostly be in one of two hierarchical, centrally controlled armies. Door to door means door to door. But the doors are already segregated signicantly into different regions.
That, BTW, is why there is no "One World Government" now ... and probably not ever. There are a LOT of countries because people are ungovernable unless they identify, enough, with their overlords. Sure, enough armed superiority can keep a hostile populace locked down for a time, but not forever, and generally not for long.
Besides, I think the majority of the US population, and certainly by region, doesn't want to be part of the DemonRat communist-dictatorship cum Fascist agenda. And that majority has enough weapons, knowledge, and brains to make the whole Rube-Goldberg machine practically ungovernable.
