I think I posted a recent study showing that, ALONE, done twice daily, nasal irrigation reduces hospitalization > 8 TIMES. It also reduces symptoms dramatically (reduces viral load, both in yourself and in exposure to others).
This regimen should also work very effectively with any other respiratory viruses which breed in the nose. Keep the viral load down and the viruses can't get very far.
Keep this up 2x daily or more for 14 days. Actually, it would be best to just make it a regular part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth.
P.S. If you have povidone iodine (usually 10%) dilute it 10/1 or more with saline solution for an even more assured kill. However, I read long ago that saline, alone, is pretty deadly to viruses: the Cl- ion is part of your body's natural defense and completely safe. I wouldnt' use iodine every day, only when I think I really might have come into contact with something. And the study on just saline gives you high effectiveness together with complete assurance of safety. Maybe 1/2 tsp of table salt in a cup or so of DISTILLED water, if you are mixing your own.
Warming the water a tad (say 15 seconds in a microwave-test for comfort) makes the saline solution even more effective at dissolving mucous. Just let the water do the work GENTLY flowing into the nose and, if your sinuses are clear enough, flowing OUT the other nostril. Blow only gently to clear out your snot - mostly simple gravity does the job. This, also, dramatically reduces hay fever and any other issues with your nose getting stuffy. Ancient yogi medicine!
Very simple. Very safe. And you will breath easier, in more ways than one.
