I am thinking I maybe took rbit's comment mistakenly. Just about everything he says is a joke, so he was probably just doing a Dr Strangelove at my expense.

He said "ball is in Putin's court". I think he is advocating for Putin to just send over 6,000 nukes and bring humanity to a climax.

Dark humor often takes me a little while to adjust to, before I can start laughing properly. I guess that's the advantage of being older and atheist. What is the point of the world going on after one dies, after all? "If I'm going to die, everyone else should be a good sport and just join me!"

No wonder Musk thinks it is vital to get humans situated on Mars before the end of the decade: there should be someone set up with popcorn for the spectacular finale!

Re: “To begin with, the analogy is massively flawed: like there is a "ball" and one side can only "get ready" while the other prepares to "serve". And then it goes one side OR the other until one side "wins" and the other "loses".”
I think it's a basketball analogy, not a tennis analogy. In basketball, whoever has the ball isn't expected to promptly turn it over to the opponent. Quite the opposite. The team with the ball... particularly at the end... gets to formulate the strategy or strategies that decide the game.
