Another interesting Musk quote is:

"Old people don’t change their minds, with rare exception, they just die. Without death, there would not be change."

He has previously elaborated, stating that if old, stale thinking does not "die," fresher, innovative thoughts will not come along and flourish. For that reason, extended lifetimes would result in civilizational stagnation.

It's a depressing thought with which I am not certain I agree. After all, Einstein was scoffed at but ultimately won out. Ramanujan couldn't find a mathematician who would take his proofs seriously . . . until one who was open minded did. Don't better ideas usually come out on top in the end by virtue of their being superior?

BTW, in Vernor Vinge's "Marooned In Real Time," all of humanity present for the singularity vanished. The few who returned to Earth following the singularity possessed varying levels of technology depending on how close to the singularity their lives had been. The individuals who'd been the closest were superpowers unto themselves. No government could threaten them. It's an interesting idea that I could see happening. Perhaps Musk views himself as almost being at that point.

I haven't seen anything by Vinge in which he stated the singularity would come in the 2020s. In fact, he's described various types of singularities in his stories, so I'm not sure which one he might think is going to happen now. One futurist who HAS talked of a technological singularity coming in the ballpark of 2030 is the inventor, Ray Kurzweil. He's no slouch either. In fact, I'd take his predictions over Vernor Vinge's. Kurzweil has written a book, "The Singularity is Near" that might interest some here.
