I worked in the Old Executive Office Building next to the White House for a while in the 1980s. Worked for the National Program Office. Saw President Reagan a couple times. Saw bush senior quite often. Was a continuation of government program in the event of a nuclear war.

The Soviet military truly believed we were going to attack them with cruise missiles and destroy them. They were ok with the ICBMs and mutual assured destruction thing because of the 20-30 minute warning would give them time to launch. But they were terrified of our cruise missile program. So our military brass believed the Soviets would attack us first before we could get our cruise missile program deployed.
So we were preparing to survive a nuclear war.

Do you remember President Reagan saying he was going to take down the Soviets? And that he was going to do it by out spending them militarily?

Working there was the best job I ever had. I loved working in that organization.
Clinton declassified and cancelled the program when he got in office. Remnants of the program survived and were activated on Sept 11.

This wiki page has some info in the program. Some of it is accurate, some not very accurate.

Roosia!
I was a mere lad when I first heard anything of any significance about Roosia.

The Berlin Airlift: What It Was, Its Importance in the Cold War

On June 24, 1948, Soviet forces blockaded all road, rail and water routes into Berlin’s Allied-controlled areas, stifling the vital flow of food, coal and other supplies. Soviet troop numbers dwarfed those of the Allies, which had drawn down after the war, so there was little the Allies could do about it militarily.

...next thing ya know they got me and my classmates doing "Duck and Cover" drills to prepare for a nuclear attack. The Rooskies didn't nuke us, but they threatened to and old Khruschev pounded his shoe on a podium at the United Nations and swore that he would bury us all.

Later on I found myself serving in the U.S. Military in a country where the Rooskies were funding the potential death of me and micro and a shitload of our buddies.

Then along came Ron and called the bluff of the Rooskies. Turns out they weren't quite as scary as the dems thought they were.

Now the Rooskies are trying to over run another country. It was only gonna take a couple of days.

I said all that so I can say this. We been running from the Rooskies for most of my 78 years of life. They have been the proverbial high school bully who had everyone scared to death of them. Right now they are taking a beating from the Visual Aids Nerd. Since we are afraid to do the job ourselves (by WE I mean Democrats) let's give the Ukrainians the tools to do the job.
