Re: “Re: “Keep us posted please De!””
As it turns out, we're getting a bit more snow than was predicted.

I woke to an accumulated 6 inches and cleared it from the deck and dog yard so that the poor mutt could go out. This was light, fluffy snow.

By midafternoon, another 6 inches had accumulated. It was much heavier, water-laden snow - the type that freezes solid overnight and becomes a real bear to clear. So I went out again around 2:30 and shoveled both the deck and the dog yard. Then I pulled out the snowblower at 3:45 and worked the driveway. It was dark before long, but I've got good lights in the yard. They flickered four times while I was out there, so the heavy snow was obviously taking a toll on area trees. We have just one tub, so when I got in, my wife and I took our respective evening showers, then filled the tub so we would have a water reserve in case of a power outage. Lights have continued to flicker, and we did lose power for two minutes a short time ago.

The storm is supposed to end at 7 AM. If you don't hear from me in the morning, you'll know why. So far, though, all is well.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Re: “Keep us posted please De!”
They updated the Weather Warning:

"WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Snowfall of 8 to 12 inches expected with higher snowfall totals expected for elevations above 1500 feet."

And it's supposed to snow from 7 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. Saturday.

We live at 1100 feet. The forecasts we see are usually for the town center which is 900 feet lower. I like this forecast which makes the connection between altitude and quantity more obvious. I need to plan on 10 or 11 inches.

A foot of snow isn't that bad as long as it's dry snow. Wet snow is terrible. Shoveling even a couple of inches can be backbreaking. The snow blower (rated at 40 feet) throws wet snow just 5 or 6 feet and often has to be "blown" repeatedly. In Virginia, there were several "worst ever!" storms of around 30 inches, storms that shut down Fairfax for five straight days! (I imagine CTJ was there for 2 or 3 of those blizzards.) People were abandoning their cars in the middle of major roads! But I don't think too much snow has fallen at once in the time I've lived in NH. Now to see if it actually is as big as they're suggesting.

I think predictions are usually worse than reality. The Weather People would rather be safe than sorry.

In any case, I prefer more snow over less. When it's just 3 or 4 inches, my tendency is to shovel by hand - which is slow and hard work. It's not logical; it's just what I do. Why ding up the snow blower on my gravel driveway when I don't HAVE to??? Rolling Eyes

But above 4 inches? Out comes the snow blower. It's always easier and faster than manual shoveling. And do you remember my posts about how often I was falling? The snow blower gives me something to hang onto. I might slip, but I don't fall.
