Decomposed > Putin wanted to keep NATO from parking its missiles 350 miles from Moscow. The time from launch to impact would be about 4 minutes. Do you understand why that would be unacceptable to him?
All that was needed to keep Putin from invading Ukraine was to give him an assurance that Ukraine wouldn't let that happen. But, no. We wanted a war.

I don't think so De.
Putin has wanted Ukraine since at least 2014.
The "NATO is crowding me" is just the best excuse he could come up with.
I've also read where it is said Putin wants to put all the former USSR 'countries' back into his 'Empire'.
I'll agree with you that ALL those countries need to increase their defense spending as long as Russia (or China) remain a threat.
Post WWII all of West Europe was allowed to re-from into independent nations. NATO does not have a history of 'imperialistic expansion'. All of Eastern Europe was consolidated into the USSR - russian empire. Over in Asia? N. Korea tried to re-unify by force of arms. N. Vietnam did (finally) succeed in unifying by force of arms. In short, Communism does have a history of expanding by seizing other peoples lands.
