During the course of my computer problems, I did a full update thinking that MAYBE it would fix the microphone. It didn't seem to until this afternoon when, following one of my many reboots, the problem suddenly cleared up.

I told you earlier that after it fixed itself, I was reluctant to do another reboot for fear of losing "the fix." But you can only go so long without rebooting so I decided to bite the bullet now and see what would happen. First, though, I ran CCLEANER to get the system in better shape. To my surprise, the registry cleanup found 24 problems. It usually finds just one or two. Furthermore, a bunch of them had to do with the audio system and with something being uninstalled. Now, this could be because of my numerous attempts to reinstall the audio driver, but I'm actually even more suspicious that Microsoft broke the audio then pushed through the solution.

I rebooted and everything is good.

After the full update I'd done earlier, I noticed that Microsoft Edge was running in the background. That was a change. Edge is a real resource hog and I don't want it running. It was time to disable it. This, then, is my long-winded way of telling you guys how to check your Windows 10 systems and disable Edge if it's active. What you need to do is:

1) Press Windows Key + X
2) Click on the Task Manager
3) Select the Startup tab
4) Find Microsoft Edge in the list. If it's not disabled, disable it by right clicking and choosing Disable
5) Get out by pressing the escape key (ESC).

Now reboot. The first time you reboot your system may take longer than usual. After it adjusts for Edge not running, it should be better than before. You can always un-do everything and reactivate it, but I don't think you'll want to.

My laptop is working again. I didn't do anything to fix it - so it's either a sporadic problem or the whole thing was Microsoft's doing.

Meanwhile, I'm scared to reboot. I think odds are 50/50 that I'll lose the mike again when I do.
