But at the same time I look at countries like Russia and China and the ways they keep trying to expand their empires. The game goes like this (usually). Make a small 'incursion' . . . Call for a 'Cease fire' followed by 'Peace Talks' and wind up 'owning' some real estate they just stole from another country.
In 2014 Russia stole Crimea and half the Donbas from Ukraine.
China is claiming the entire South China Sea and resources within it from the other countries bordering the region. China is also encroaching on India's territories.
Not that long ago biden gave Putin a green light - he said a 'small incursion' would be OK. So Putin went for the whole enchilada . . . He probably believed his 'Mighty Army' could take Ukraine in a couple of weeks then call for 'Peace Talks' and rake all of Ukraine into his 'empire'.
And, No, anybody claiming 'Putin was terrified that NATO might set up shop in Ukraine' is swallowing Russian propaganda.
Russia has a pretty sophisticated nuclear arsenal. Nobody in their right mind wants to invade Russia. Just look at Napoleons little mis-adventure there . . Germany (WWII) and their little mis-adventure there . . The Nukes just add another layer of disaster for invading Russia.
Russia INVADED Ukraine. Russia's army took a beating. How? Because between 2014 and 2022 european countries and the U.S. sold or helped Ukraine to buy the sort of weapons that made it possible. Trained the Ukrainians in the use of said weapons, and trained the Ukrainian troops to fight more like the Western Armies do. I could go on . . .
I read Strategy Page religiously. There is a LOT of stuff about Wars and war toys in there. Along with stories about who is doing what to whom.
I'd like to live in a world where every country respects every other countries rights, persons, and properties. But we don't live in such a world. And China and Russia are the two biggest violators. How do we discourage such behavior?
