Asking a Theoretical Physicist About the Physics of Consciousness | Roger Penrose | #244

Penrose won the nobel prize in 2020 for his work on black holes, with Stephen Hawking. He is a notable mathematician and theoretical physicist who works mainly with advanced geometries.
Why Penrose believes AI & algorithms cannot explain consciousness...that consciousness is something more which cannot be explained by current physics. Why he believes the universe goes through cycles, yet expands forever (no contraction). And - at the very end - the current physical evidence, which no other current model can explain, that this is NOT the first cycle! Also, what is the connection between math, beauty, morality, NP (non computable) problems, and reality. Etc. Etc. Amazing, wide ranging discussion which is, yet, surprisingly accessible.
