Marine Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a system used by boats & ships to keep track of other vessels near them. It’s a black box transceiver that TX/RX vessel Data. boatname, position, heading, speed, closest point of approach (CPA) and time (TCPA), and a bunch of other data. It will give you a warning if your on a collision course. It’s really a great system for avoiding vessel collisions. And keeping track of boats and ships around you.
The Feds last year set up speed restriction zones in the Atlantic Ocean allegedly to reduce boat collisions with Right Whales.
This year the federal government is planning on using the AIS system to track/record boat speeds so they can give the owners big fines for traveling to fast through Right Whale restricted areas.
And of course the gov will also be collecting all the other data besides boat name and speed, such as time of travel and destination. Just to keep track of where you’ve been and where you’re going.
The end result will be boaters will be turning off their AIS electronics defeating the purpose of the system and making boating less safe.
The governments can’t help themself. With them it’s always about control.
