Re: “Does anyone really think there would be any drug cartels in Mexico if the United States didn't have massively demand and ENCOURAGE all those drugs? Does anyone really think this starts with US citizens being forced to take drugs by evil Mexican drug lords? Wouldn't free markets suggest there would be no drug traffic across the border if not for the US CAUSING this nightmare?”
Yep. You've got that right.

As for the influx of illegals, I've long been of the opinion that the desire to come here would dry up right quick if we just made it illegal to EMPLOY an illegal. What I mean is that every employer should be required to check with the IRS or with some new government agency to make sure that the person he is hiring is here legally. If not, then if the employer hires the individual, the employer would get socked with a million dollar fine and go to jail for a year or two.

How's that sound? Do you think illegals would keep coming if we had such a law? Do you think the ones already here would stay?

I've never heard a politician propose this, yet it would be relatively easy to put in place. Says a lot about our politicians, doesn't it?

Employers would need to show that they made a good-faith effort to check on the status of their employees. If they did that, they'd have done their part even if they accidentally hire an illegal. We don't want to punish employers who TRY to do the right thing. But those who fail to check yet hire anyway would get a brutal punishment. I think such a law would do wonders.
