Puhleeease ... the ChiComs are constantly going out of their way to manufacture numerous "ways in which they can be provoked." Hell, it's practically a cottage industry for them. They think it's a good way to try to keep everyone else off-balance and walking on eggshells. Personally, I think President Trump was correct in how he handled them - publicly accuse them of being bad actors (which they undeniably are), treat them with disdain, hit their crap with tariffs, bring manufacturing of products currently made in China back to the USA, and negotiate from a position of strength.
