The young man in your video is absolutely right when he says that there is some value in college and that it all depends on what you go into. He's going into architecture so as to build better homes. That makes sense. My boy is in processor design. I don't think he'd be learning that on his own. One day, hopefully, he'll have a pretty good income.

But when I think of the son of my cousin who obtained degrees in music and political science, or the MANY bright high school kids I came to know who fell in love with music and drama and then got college degrees in the same, it makes me feel ill. Financially, the best of them are now teaching music in middle schools. But a girl who majored in drama at Radford now runs the Winnie-the-Pooh ride at Disneyworld. What do you suppose that pays?

In fairness, a former student of my son's choir teacher is now playing the Phantom on Broadway. He's doing well. And her husband was vocal coach to a boy who landed one of the two leads in the the touring run of Book of Mormon. He's, no doubt, also doing well.

But these are two lucky students out of thousands that these two teachers have taught in their 30-year careers. A disturbing number of kids fall in love with band, choir, drama, dance, art . . . and proceeded to major in them. While their degrees were as pricey as degrees in engineering or nursing, now that they're done with school most of these young adults are buried in debt and miserable.
