One reason for the Beatles' popularity may be that it's almost impossible to hear them.”

Re: “... more people remember The Beatles than remember Mr. Paul Jones.”
Many don't know it, but the Beatles did not make their American television debut on the Ed Sullivan show. They made their LIVE American debut there. But their television debut came on NBC News (The Huntley Brinkley Report), a full three months earlier... and, in some ways, Edwin Newman's opinion in that broadcast was even more critical than Mr. Paul Jones's! You can listen to it, if you wish, via the link at the end of this post.

In all fairness to Mr. Newman, musicianship was not the Beatles' strength. They were actually poor musicians. None of them could read music. They sometimes joked about how bad they were!

But if older generations couldn't get past their hair, their unusual style, the simplistic lyrics, their ragged musicianship and their less than stellar voices to see that they were incredibly creative and prolific songwriters, had marvelous ears for catchy jingles, had invented a wholly NEW style of music, and sang wonderful harmonies, then that was THEIR problem.

Of course, it didn't take too many of the Beatles' brilliant press conferences for many of their biggest critics to change their tune. Others, like my Dad, never became fans of the Beatles as persons while still loving many of their songs. What would you expect? He was an Air Force officer supporting Vietnam even as the Beatles were criticizing the campaign. That would affect almost anyone.

There is nothing attractive about the looks or the sounds of the beatles.

But, with the benefit of looking back over 59 years, I would bet big money - maybe even ten bucks - that more people remember The Beatles than remember Mr. Paul Jones.
