Decomposed > Wrong... and wrong. America and Russia got tired of fighting their respective wars and pulled out.


That much is true.
But, what was America's goal in Vietnam? To keep S. Vietnam from being taken over by the Communists. From the perspective that we did NOT keep N. Vietnam from taking over we lost. (Probably a good thing as 'forever wars' are quite expensive with no return on investment.)

Similar situation with the Russians in Afghanistan - they did NOT manage to make Afghanistan a 'puppet state' of theirs.

Or is failure to achieve the desired objectives not a failure?

Wrong... and wrong. America and Russia got tired of fighting their respective wars and pulled out. They didn't lose. Their allies lost. If Russia and America had lost, Russia would be living under the Taliban today and we'd be living under North Vietnam.
