Re: “How might this get fixed and turned around?”
There are a number of possible problems that need to be investigated. 1) Most of what we buy is made overseas. Foreign manufacturers don't hear from their customers and therefore don't care whether they screw them over with shoddy merchandise. 2) Customers used to be brand conscious. They aren't anymore. 3) American quality of life is in decline and (I assume) price is playing a bigger role in their buying decisions. 4) People are buying things that quickly obsolesce - like gaming systems and smart phones. They therefore don't care if their purchases aren't durable. They'd have wanted something new in 2-3 years anyway. 5) Americans have lost their sense of pride. Customers don't try to keep up with the Joneses. They don't try as hard to have nice things. 6) Americans no longer have high class role models, so they don't try to be high class themselves. 7) Employees have lost their sense that if they do superior work, it will be recognized and lead to promotions. 8 ) Businesses don't have as many career employees as they used to - which, again, leads to employees who take less pride in what they do. It also results in employees who have less experience and therefore make more mistakes. 9) Maybe this is all wrong. There was always cheap crap on the market. Remember when cars didn't last beyond 70,000 miles? Old houses didn't have nearly as many frills as they do today and weren't built as well.

That's what I can quickly think of. There are, no doubt, many more possibilities. If I could fix just one thing, it would probably be to bring manufacturing back to the U.S.

Here's a question for y'all: How can this be fixed?

Once upon a time, "quality" was a deciding factor in consumer shopping and there was real pressure on lower quality manufacturers.

Now most manufacturers clearly have no incentive to provide quality. In my experience this goes hand in hand with consumers accepting ever lower standards and, in my experience, little self-esteem. By that I mean that consumers put up with all manner of abuse, all manner of cheapness, all manner of self-abasement. They seem unable to learn, unable to do without, unable to properly consider longer term consequences.

How might this get fixed and turned around?
