Ok. Well, now you are getting into different definitions of loss. I was only speaking to loss which can be quantified at a point in time...and for finance purposes. US tax code has approximately NO real world anchor; but use it for general thinking about investing, if it makes you feel better about your losses.

If I die in the back room, or kill my wife, but nobody reports my death or finds her body, neither of us is really dead, of course. And no felony has been committed.

Zim : But, I have some stock in a power company ticker BKH. My BKH is currently worth about 12% less than what I paid for it. Is it really a loss?

Fiz > Yes, it really is a loss. However, as someone reminded me a while ago, in some circumstances EVERYONE loses.

I don't think so Fiz. You could call it an 'unrealized loss'. But until I sell I can't claim the loss for tax purposes.

Zim.
