Oh, the felony was committed all right. Jut nobody noticed it BUT - when they do 'you' can be charged.
In the case of my BKH. . . Yeah, my net worth is less but unless I sell there is a chance the share price might come back up.
In 2000 after the tech stock collapse several things I owned became worth less than I paid for them . . . but they came back a few years later. Same story in 2008.
BKH is a power company. Probably regulated - which means I got shares in a golden goose 'they' don't want going under because they want the lights to stay on. My dividends are good so I'm not going to sweat the 'unrealized loss' too much.

Ok. Well, now you are getting into different definitions of loss. I was only speaking to loss which can be quantified at a point in time...and for finance purposes. US tax code has approximately NO real world anchor; but use it for general thinking about investing, if it makes you feel better about your losses.
