My suspicions were immediately raised by the fact that the amount spent per month spans a wide range, while the amount 'generated' through annual sales is a specific amount. It seems to me that if you know the one figure precisely, you ought to know the other with the same precision.

If you divide the annual sales of $49.2 billion by twelve you get $4.1 billion per month. Divide that by a population of 331 million and you get $12.38. And THAT is America's average monthly expenditure -- assuming that the data I pulled from the excerpted paragraph is right, which it clearly isn't, but at least my result is believable. $12.38 is a far cry from "between $244 and $313."

Maybe $244 - $313 is what the average TRANSVESTITE spends. Now that I could believe.
