Can you buy a gun if you are mentally ill?
They Fall Under a Broader Category of Mental Illness. According to federal law, individuals cannot buy a gun if a court or other authority has deemed them a “mental defective” or committed them involuntarily to a mental hospital. 

...and I would like to add that transgenderism is a mental illness.

Regardless of the shooter’s intentions, the real issue here is the ease of access to deadly weapons  

...he/she/it was in violation of the gun law prohibiting people who are looney toons from having weapons. At least that was the case when half the country couldn't sleep at night from worrying about what sex they wuz
