The Founding Fathers didn't envision the 24/7, all-encompassing, massive monster that government has become in this country. They thought of political office as truly a public service ... more of an imposition on the office holder than a personal windfall to be taken advantage of. They thought such service would be intermittent and temporary ... turned over often to the next poor schmuck who agreed to do his bit for his fellow Americans. But, you're right ... they should have realized that humans are not like one of God's greatest creations - dogs, who are honorable, loyal, and protective.

The attribution is a little fuzzy, but someone once said, "When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic."

Apparently, Alexis De Tocqueville wrote something quite similar in his book Democracy in America ... “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”

Fiz > I don't know...maybe the Founders didn't see that problem in the 13 colonies? But that seems impossible.

Or,
Maybe the Founders thought the 'checks and balances' they built into the System would over-ride 'Mans' larcenous impulses?
