Well De,
What I keep getting back to . . . Is do I want to live in a world where bigger stronger countries have a 'right' to seize real estate or resources from smaller countries? Or do I want to live in a world where borders and international agreements are supposed to be adhered to?

In 2014 Russia seized a chunk of Ukraine - and got away with it.

In 2022 Russia tried to seize the rest of Ukraine . . . and lost an entire army and most of their front line tanks and other armored vehicles.. .

For a while now China has been claiming the entire South China Sea . . . China has also been nibbling at territory along the border with India . . . Should Tibet be a part of China?

If Russia is weakened enough . . . will China decide to annex the Russian Far East?

Looks to me like WWIII is coming . . . not because of the United States, but because two major world powers are bent on expanding their empires at the expense of their neighbors.

...

Yeah, Russia might just take Bakhmut . . . but will it be worth the price?

Zim.

Re: “If I were Ukraine I'd just keep on killing Russians till either Russia imploded (again) or they left every square millimeter of Ukraine.”
Can we agree that you'd also stop once they killed you?

It seems to me naïve to believe news reports. This goes for reports from either side. They're all propaganda.

Territory maps (posted below) are probably a more objective means of adjudging progress.

From what I see, Russia had its biggest success in terms of territory by August, 2022. At that point, Ukrainian forces pushed back, reclaiming land outside Kharkiv in the north. In November, it tried to do the same in the south, near Kherson, without much success. I hear that Russia retreated from Kherson, but the maps don't show it. Russia is now making its own push, fighting to take Bakhmut. What I hear is that the city is 80% claimed.

Cities are of far greater import than rural lands, so my sense is that whoever wins Bakhmut has the momentum.
