We've got a lot of retirees on this board, so our incomes may not be impacted. What WILL be impacted is prices, with the same result: Inability to buy as much.

For many Americans, it will be worse. Businesses will fail on a grand scale, and unemployment will soar. So will prices ultimately rise? Or fall? I'd say RISE, as our government is likely to respond to the unemployment crisis with a wave of subsidies the like of which we've never seen.
Re: “If you don't have really deep pockets and a good job you really ought to begin raising chickens THIS weekend.”That's not such a bad plan anyway. Folks I've spoken to about chickens tell me that raising them is fun. But it IS expensive. Raising chickens isn't much of a cost saver - not at current prices. Maybe if folks also started growing their own grain, but I don't see that happening in today's urban and suburban neighborhoods. Chickens require space, and urban America doesn't have any. Moreover, in the TEOTWAWKI you foresee, chickens will be tempting targets for hungry neighbors, both urban and suburban. I guess the quick answer for that problem is to raise them INDOORS.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I'd say just start off with the assumption that at least 1/4 of all your income is gone. For most Americans that would leave them eating out of trash cans, with perhaps a side of roasted rat on very special occasions. For most of the rest of us, that would leave us with ZERO "discretionary spending" money. I mean zero: no subscriptions, no travel nor eating out, no new clothes nor other trinkets, and severe curtailment in any and all comforts.

And THEN assume there will be little to zero support from the government, for anyone, as our government relies 100% on its Reserve Currency Status to fund pretty much everything beyond mere interest payments on existing debt. You THINK everything, or most everything, is paid for by taxes. You think wrong. You think WAY wrong.

So, you should assume Zombie Apocalypse, as the "most Americans" I referenced above decide they would rather take a chance on EATING YOU then eat any more garbage from trash cans.

Those would all be good assumptions as at least $1TRILLION of US "consumer spending" per year disappears PERMANENTLY....so it cannot be "deficit spent" by selling more US Treasuries, nor any other sustainable means.

If you don't have really deep pockets and a good job you really ought to begin raising chickens THIS weekend. You are pretty much out of time, and your "stonks" and pension are not to be relied upon. Nor your "home equity".

I'm working pretty hard this year to right my escape raft. And I should be way better set than 99% of Americans. But I am not feeling set at all. Not at all. Under stress our whole system of connivance, and lies, and military bases around the world, and sitting duck naval vessels, will fold like a Potemkin Village. The Ponzi of the last 100 years IS going to come to a close soon. Hopefully, we have a year or three beyond this one, but I wouldn't count on that if I were you.

And I might learn to pray a lot more for inner peace and God's forgiveness. There's not likely to be much of that to spare.
