Micro: "the Founders were just a little busy"
I know, Micro, I am just frustrated. Thank you for reminding me.
Especially when you realize that the US won the war against England only in 1983, and the first attempt at consensus government failed massively it is easier to appreciate the imperfections, and the effort to get things as good as they were. It was almost a twenty year process to get from the decision to break away to the decision to massively restrict centralized power and preserve actual sovereignty to the CITIZENS.
And, so, the Bill of Rights with the current Constitution was only approved in Dec 1991. It is well documented that it was a very difficult compromise to even get to that consensus. It was a difficult negotiation between people who wanted substantially different things in the new government. Clearly, a substantial portion -- maybe even a majority -- didn't want "ordinary" people to have so much liberty and self-determination! Some really tough cases demanded free speech and right to bear arms in case the government became corrupt down the road...held out...and won!
We were lucky to get what we got; especially the 1st and 2nd, which were never popular among the authoritarians/elitists.
We will now be lucky to keep it.
