De,
I would have recommended an external monitor. And, there is a thing called 'PE Builder'. The version I have includes a utility for changing passwords. And I have successfully changed the Admin as well as User passwords on Windows 7 machines with it. (I think it works as well with Windows 10.)

AOMEI Technology newly released AOMEI PE Builder Version 2.0 on September 28, 2017 after long time hard working. It’s a major upgrade. Both current and new users can download AOMEI PE Builder by visiting product page. AOMEI PE Builder helps you to FREE create a bootable environment based on Windows PE without installing AIK/WAIK, which integrates a set of tools that enables you to boot up your computer for easy maintenance and fast recovery tasks when the native system is corrupted or cannot be used.

I picked up the HP Elitebook from the auction house a week ago. It seemed solid, so I ordered a power supply/cord and battery. Those arrived today.

After a couple of hours of charging, I gave it a whirl. She started right up. The replacement battery wasn't needed and can be returned.

There's one little problem. You see that big Nike swoosh running from the lower middle to the upper right? That ain't supposed to be there. In fact the lower half of the screen doesn't work at all. Nor does the rightmost 20% of the screen. And the part that DOES work doesn't work well. It flickers and jitters and has lines through it. In short, somebody smacked this display *hard* - maybe with a bowling ball from high altitude. Or clo may have done a ballet sissonne from any altitude (she's not a small woman after all) onto the face of this poor little machine. (I hear she killed her second husband that way.)

At this point, I could buy a replacement display for about $30, but I don't think I'm up for that. I can also plug an external monitor in and see if it works. So long as I don't have to enable the video port, it's easily done. I have spare monitors at the barn. But if the Elitebook's video port has to be turned on in the BIOS, that's all she wrote. There's no way to do that when you can't see the screen.

My guess is that this will be a quick and easy workaround. After that, I'll just need to reset the Windows 7 admin password. I hear it's easy to do, that Windows 7's security sucks, but I don't know if I'll agree when I actually try to do it. This is uncharted territory.
