My wife and I are leaving for Texas next Wednesday, the 17th, to attend the high school graduation of granddaughter #4. She's the granddaughter who's going to be attending my alma mater, Michigan Technological University, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, in the fall, where she's been accepted into the Chemistry program. She's also the one who's been awarded a four-year, full-tuition scholarship.
As for our "means of transportation", while I usually prefer to drive for events like this, as we did for the previous graduations of our three other granddaughters, this time we're going by AMTRAK.
Our youngest, son, and his fiancee (they're getting married in August so that's our next trip), from Michigan, is also coming for the graduation (and for business so he gets to expense at least some of this) and they've rented an Airbnb where we'll be staying near our son's house in Katy, Texas.
The graduation is on Monday, the 22nd, and we're also going to take the opportunity to visit some friends in Waco and perhaps one other place, if we can manage the time. Our son is providing us a car from the 'fleet' that he has access to, what with he and his wife and three daughters, each of which have their own car. He says that they can manage loaning us a car for the week that we'll be there.
We start back on Saturday, May 27th.
We're leaving our car at son #2's house as he lives only about 15 minutes from Union Station and will drop us off and pick us up on our return.
Note that we've booked a bedroom on the train which provides a private bathroom & shower, complimentary meals in the dining car, as well as lounge car privileges.
While I've ridden many trains in Europe, the UK, Japan and China, I've never done an overnight trip before. And as for AMTRAK, our only previous experience was a short trip from Santa Barbara to Irvine, which we took in 1997.
Anyway, I'll take lots of pictures and since they have WiFi service on the train, I'll probably be posting some comments about how we're doing on this new adventure that we we're going to be having.
