Joey just phoned us. His sponsor called him into his office and told him that the project lead from that Illinois trip told the sponsor that he was "REEEELY impressed with Joey." Whew ~ Big sigh from his old man. What great news. Understand that this is the two year mark in Joey's 6-year Ph.D. journey. It's a critical time. Joey's closest friend at the school, a girl named Allison who is attending under the same program, was effectively fired this week by her sponsor. The sponsor said that she had not made suitable progress on the project she's on.

And as quick as that, her Ph.D. plans end. It's possible, but I think unlikely, that she can find a new sponsor. She will otherwise be leaving UCSD with a Masters Degree, though.

Joey, meanwhile, does not have a Masters Degree. As he put it, the work he's doing for his sponsor trumps any classes he might want to take. And there was that quarter he lost because of the big University strike. So, had he been fired as his friend was, he'd have to pay for school and finish his Masters Degree, or leave with nothing. Thankfully that did not happen and he's in his sponsor's good graces.

I think Joey needs to take one more class. He should have his degree when the Fall semester ends.
