I'm nearly certain my parents' home movies weren't Super 8. They were probably 8mm, and 8mm film is not compatible with a Super 8 projector.

Oh well. I'll know for sure in a few weeks when I unpack the movies again and do a little research.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

In other yard saleing news...

We went to an estate sale. The brother-in-law of the two folks running the sale had passed and they were selling everything. The prices were incredible. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) we arrived late and didn't buy as much as we might have.

Early on, I saw the player piano. I made a comment to the effect that I wasn't interested, "but wow." The guy then took it upon himself to try to sell it to me. He assured me that it worked perfectly and asked me if I'd like him to put one of the spools of music in. I declined, and he then asked his sister how much she wanted for the piano. She said $25. She just wanted it gone. Well, I really wasn't interested and didn't buy it, but that should give you a feel for what some of their pricing was like.

I did gravitate to a small movie projector. I have some old family movies from my father's house and am not sure if they are 8mm, 16mm or what, but it wouldn't have mattered since none of us were sure what type of movie projector it was. I think there's a good chance, better than 50-50, that it will work with my father's films so I bought it for ten dollars.

My wife called me to the bedroom where she'd found maybe a thousand or more DVDs in a floor-to-ceiling bookcase. She's in the fourth week of recovering from her shoulder surgery and couldn't reach the higher ones. I got 'em down for her since the tips I had to help her jump higher wouldn't have been appreciated. (See? ribit's not the only one who's learned a thing or two from his years of marriage. And my wife can SHOOT.)

Unfortunately, the flicks my wife was most interested in were just empty cases. She was distraught. You see, she's a Sherlock Holmes aficionado.

I left the room, and my wife struck up a conversation with the other guy's sister. She called me back a few minutes later. "De - she says they might be in the stereo system in the other room! The DVD carousels each hold four hundred DVDs!"

"They aren't plugged in," I replied. "And there's four of them. Do you know how long it would take to look through sixteen hundred DVDs for a couple of Sherlock Holmes' movies?"

But she's my wife and she knows better than I do, or so I hear.

My wife found out from this lady that they'd already thrown away four of the DVD carousels full of movies. Let me say that again. They'd thrown away FOUR DVD carousels containing sixteen hundred movies.

Meanwhile, I was looking at the carousels. "Hey, these two on top are CD carousels, not DVD carousels." I observed. "So they just have two DVD carousels... and at most eight hundred DVDs to go through. That's not so bad."

The yard saleing woman left to ask her brother about running power to the two DVD carousels.

My wife said, "We should just buy them."

"What would you want to offer?" I asked.

"Maybe ten dollars apiece," she said. "After all, they threw two others away!"

I thought that was TOO cheap. Sony DVD carousels... as many as four hundred DVDs in each... $20 struck me as reasonable.

The yard saleing woman was back a moment later and said her brother was talking to someone in the back yard about sheds. When he came in, I asked what he'd take for both units.

"Fifty dollars," he said.

I thought it over. "How about forty?" I countered.

"Forty-five," he said.

Deal. I did tell him that he was lucky he wasn't haggling with my wife.

So, what we bought for $45 were the two Sony DVD changers shown below. Amazon still sells them. They're $449 apiece.

One of the two carousels opened partway as I brought it in. My wife extracted Disney's banned movie "Song of the South." It's a copy the brother-in-law apparently made but I tried it and it plays great. More importantly, it's VERY GOOD quality. You might remember that I bought a copy over the internet a few years ago and it was really poor quality. This one isn't, though. It was copied from the actual Disney DVD - which my wife also bought today in a stack of 100 DVDs for ten dollars during that brief interlude when I wasn't in the room with the two women.

Here's a photo of the two Sony components. The seven remote controls got thrown in for free when I mentioned to the guy that remote controls might be needed...
