Re: “Was wondering if Dde or anyone else may have the same experience. Also, my left chest where the heart resides seems like it is always sore and actually hurts sometimes.”
I had a lot of mild to moderate problems and I'm not back to normal even now. The biggest problem, far and away, was that my shoulders hurt like crazy when I tried to sleep on them. The left was especially bad.

Yes, there was tenderness in the sternum, and there still is. I would *NOT* want to take a punch to the chest. I half suspect it would break open.

For the longest time, I couldn't sneeze. If one came on, the sharp pain when I did that last big inhale caused the sneeze to immediately end. A year or so after I got over that, I strained my back and the problem with sneezes returned for another few months.

From months 2 to 5, I had a weird, spontaneous gasp. It was almost like a hiccup but consisted of two or three rapid inhales for no apparent reason. I told my surgeon and he told me that the phrenic nerve must be irritated. The phrenic nerve controls subconscious breathing... as in, when you sleep. People whose phrenic nerves get severed usually die, so that was comforting. He told me it would probably heal itself in a month or so, which it did.

I continue to experience an unnerving crackling in my sternum and ribcage. It doesn't hurt. It just feels like things aren't held together quite right.

I've got bumps along the incision from the wires that hold my chest together, and they sometimes get irritated. I don't like to touch the incision for that reason.

And, yes, I was weaker than normal for at least a year. At this point, I'm sure I could backpack up the mountain I climbed a few months before my surgery. So I'm good in that respect - but it's been close to four years!

That's about it. The surgery and first month weren't as bad as I expected, but this isn't something I'd want to do again. Hopefully I'll never need to.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

One thing I have noticed is I tire rather easily without a lot of physicality involved to make that happen.

Was wondering if Dde or anyone else may have the same experience. Also, my left chest where the heart resides seems like it is always sore and actually hurts sometimes.

I am assuming that is normal for open heart patients??

De, you experience post op tenderness like that which just seems to last especially if ya do anything that requires a little exertion?

Since this is new to me I really don't know
