Just some info Re: mandatory military service:
In Israel, every person who is of oage must serve two years in the Israeli military.
What the military does is instill discipline into your thoughts and actions as well as teach ya how to fight. Some are better than others at hand to hand combat but if ya has been trained rigorously, most of the time, not all, you will be the one walking away from such an encounter..
As you well know there is not a lot of discipline in many people. They immediately speak about something they know nothing about , and it shows. They do things they are ill prepared and not prepared at all to do.
So, discipline teaches us NOT to do something and keep yer YAP shut when ya don;t know the subject matter and make a fool of yerself as well as the physical aspects of when to fight and when to live to fight another day..
When ya finally reaches the ancient age of Ribit and anyone else 70 or older, then we can overlook things that may be slightly "off" .
As far as declaring one's loyalty or willingness to fight for their country , I see absolutely nothing wrong with that, but with some rationale.
IF the country is under military assault or attack from a foreign country and we have to fight for our homeland, then by all means don;t wait to be asked.
Defend it or lose it forever, unless one wants to learn Chinese...
There are some other exceptions I would make but because we are indeed a nation that also has freedom of thought, it is not up to me to make up rules or reasons to join the military..
I just basically wanted to add two pennies worth of thought and nobody is forced or coerced to agree.
