Re: “A while back I was looking for something like those . . .”
With auctions, you don't look for things so much as stumble across them. Then you've got to decide ahead of time what they're worth to you and whether there are other reasons not to buy them.

In yesterday's auction, I would probably have bought a really nice, large bookcase (shown below)- but I had to pass because of the forecast. The only good way of transporting it is on my flatbed trailer and it's likely to be raining during Sunday's 3-hour pickup window. Too bad. It might be wood and able to handle rain, but it also might be pressed wood. From the photos, I can't tell. If it's pressed wood, the rain would destroy it. It sold for just $28.

Then there's the whole issue of time. With 300 lots, they're often selling within 1 minute of each other. Sometimes they're selling at the same time, so you have to move fast. It helps to have a partner... one person making the decisions while the other enters and changes bids. My wife and I seem to work well together.

But that's the fun of it. It's a little bit stressful... definitely exciting... and if you're not careful, you can spend too much or buy things you don't really want. You can also screw up by not buying. See, those bookends aren't the first ones I've seen. There was a similar pair at an auction a few weeks ago. I saw them described as "Geode bookends" and assumed I knew what that meant without ever looking at the photos. When the bidding hit $16, I stopped, figuring that a couple of geodes aren't that interesting. Dumb, dumb, dumb. They sold at that price. When we picked up the lots we'd won, I saw them sitting there and really kicked myself. They were beauties - comparable, I think, to the set we won yesterday but maybe even bigger, though I won't really know until we pick up the merchandise on Sunday.

Tomorrow is also the next auction. It's smaller and not as interesting to me but it's also nearby. There's something to be said for buying from an auction that's not two hours away.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
