Re: “What's so horrible about that? ”
I guess you don't understand. "Assault weapons" have no definition. The precedent can easily be tweaked to ban every semi-automatic weapon in existence. The 2nd Amendment would then be thoroughly trashed.

It's a very big deal.

“If we can get a consensus on it, if Republicans and Democrats agreed and it passed Congress, I would sign it.

What's so horrible about that? I favor some restrictions on rocket launchers and large caliber machine guns, also. Maybe even flame throwers, and privately held nuclear weapons.

Notice he didn't even say he favored it. This issue would be a kind of a stupid hill to die on, politically.

For a tough, divisive question, easily interpreted from and extrapolated to a wide array of polarizing conclusions, it sounds like he didn't do too badly.

Do you disagree, CTJ?

For further background, from the article: "He made his statement about an “assault weapons” ban just minutes after intimating that guns are not problem. He indicated that Americans have always had guns, and that Americans used to bring firearms to school for “gun clubs,” and no one thought of shooting at children.
