De,
I'm not doubting that 'lab grown meat' can be safely produced for human consumption. I am worried about certain unscrupulous people manipulating the product to achieve nefarious ends . . .

Seems like the same people who want 'me' to eat bugs and lab meat are also the same sort of people who denied the American People good, old, cheap, safe drugs with which to fight the covid-19. I don't trust them.

Zim.

Re: “But can they 'grow from select cuts' . . . And what does whatever they have to do to get said 'cuts' to grow do to the meat?”
Yes, they can grow from 'select cuts.' But what grows forms a paste, not a 'select cut.' That's why labs are currently producing chicken nuggets and burgers, not T-bones and drumsticks. Maybe they'll learn to improve on this in a few years and actually grow bovine tenderloins and pork shoulders.

What they're doing is taking cells that can still replicate and putting them in a growth serum - one that animals normally produce for fetal tissue. It gives the cells nutrients they need. In the presence of this medium, the cells can replicate without limit... which is what so many of you are fretting about. This already happens in nature and the growth ends when the serum is withdrawn.

When human cells replicate without limit in the absence of growth serum, it's called 'cancer.' When animal cells do this, it's also called 'cancer.' But I don't think that's an appropriate analogy for what the food labs are doing. It's more akin to fetal growth... but without all the cells of a full fetus... perhaps only growing chicken thigh tissue or pig ham tissue.

Meat produced this way doesn't hurt people even if it's raw - and it's as safe as any other meat once it's been cooked. And, as I've already stated, cancerous animal meat - which doesn't seem to be what this is - doesn't lead to cancer in humans under any circumstances.

There's a big difference between being cautious ... and being a Luddite. If you're the latter, then you might be beyond help. But you also COULD do something about it by engaging your brains. Do some reading. When you understand the process and aren't just expressing an emotional overreaction based on tabloid headlines and religious prophecies, get back to me with an explanation for why animal cells that reproduce and get harvested represent a danger to people. I don't think providing such an explanation will be easy.
