Thank goodness, this only happens once every five-years...

This past Tuesday, I was subjected to the ordeal of getting my drivers license renewed. Now there are three convenient DMV offices close (within 10 miles) to where I live, and while the closest is generally considered the most difficult to process through, due mostly to the fact that it's handles probably an order of magnitude more clients per day than the other two combined, it's where I went. Note that it's also a rather old facility (it's where my wife and I had to go when we transferred our vehicles and applied for our California drivers license when we first moved here back in 1980) and it's in what most people consider a 'rougher' part of the county. That being said, it's also the only place where I could actually get in before my birthday in August. As it was, I still had to wait almost three weeks for an appointment (the other two offices, the wait was closer to six or seven weeks).

Anyway, I checked in about 10 minutes early but I still had to wait until my number was called, which was close to 45 minutes. In California, if you're over 70, you have to come in and personally apply for your DL renewal since you're required to take an eye test as well as a written (actually computerized) knowledge test. I had no problems with the eye test, got all the letters with both eyes as well as just the left and the right. As for the knowledge test, I only missed one question (they don't tell you what a passing score is) but there were a bunch of people who apparently had problems as they were in there taking it a second or third time (at least that's how it sounded when I was waiting to get my final paperwork after I passed the test).

The only real issue I had was when I had to fill out my personal details. Five-years ago, when I got my 'Real ID License', I could still honestly check-off 'Brown' for my hair color, but now I had to select 'Gray' (next time it'll probably be 'White). One plus was that I was able to enter a lower weight as I'm 35 lbs lighter than I was five-years ago.
