"Bad weather"???

An F-35 is listed as being able to fly at about 1,200 mph with a service ceiling of 50,000 ft. So, couldn't he just turn in the other direction, hit the accelerator, and take a wide turn around the storm ... or just fly over the storm?

F-35 pilot ejected from $100M jet over South Carolina due to ‘bad weather’ as experts reveal why plane couldn’t be tracked

...sounds suspiciously like a hastily thought up excuse by someone who's back was up against the wall.
