Tonight I'll be trying for another sterling trophy plate, shown below. I've got an advantage in that I can compare it to my other trophy plate - which I've measured and weighed - and do a better job of estimating value.

Tonight's plate is from 1928 and has a 10 inch diameter. My prior purchase was 6 inches and 84 grams, so I'm estimating that the new one is 233 grams, therefore containing silver worth $160.10. That's if it's the same thickness, of course, but I bet that an older plate will be as thick or better than a 3rd place trophy made in the 1950s.

There's a 15% seller's premium, so I'd be safe bidding $139.22. To get a good deal, I'll set my ceiling at $111.

And that's how experience helps.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Re: “Do all your purchases HAVE to smart?? If I want something I don't care what it's worth or anything like that.”
Jack Benny has nothing on me. Price plays a BIG role in whether I like something.Re: “Buy what YA want iffen you like it and don't worry about what it's worth.”LOL! That's not gonna happen. If I operated that way, I'd have to stay the heck away from auctions - because I'd be buying ten times as much as I do. Many of these auctions include incredible things, often going for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. It takes a little discipline to weed them out except when they're truly undervalued.

Just a few days ago, there was a nice 18K gold pendant that I was keen on. My wife pointed out how small it was - based on a single photo showing it being held between a woman's two fingers - and I brought my ceiling price down by about $20. When it later topped my $105 ceiling, I stopped bidding and watched it go for $140. IMO, the buyer overpaid - but I'll never know. You have to have discipline and trust the research you've done beforehand or these auctions will break you.
