It wasn't meant to be. The auction house added verbiage stating that Lawrence Rice was, at one time, ranked #10 in the world. The price popped and the plate sold for $166.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Tonight I'll be trying for another sterling trophy plate, shown below. I've got an advantage in that I can compare it to my other trophy plate - which I've measured and weighed - and do a better job of estimating value.

Tonight's plate is from 1928 and has a 10 inch diameter. My prior purchase was 6 inches and 84 grams, so I'm estimating that the new one is 233 grams, therefore containing silver worth $160.10. That's if it's the same thickness, of course, but I bet that an older plate will be as thick or better than a 3rd place trophy made in the 1950s.

There's a 15% seller's premium, so I'd be safe bidding $139.22. To get a good deal, I'll set my ceiling at $111.

And that's how experience helps.
