"BTW, we know the gully to have both deer and bear. The only question is when will a deer be there? I won't shoot a bear if I can help it."

If you do bag a white-tail, when you go to haul it off ... or especially if you dress it, right there, in the field ... be careful that one of those bears isn't also salivating over deer for dinner and sneaks up on ya.

Re: “this year, so there's only gonna be 4 of us. A nice, low-key Thanksgiving ”
Thanksgiving is coming ? Uh, when ?

I'm only kidding. I knew Thanksgiving was coming when I saw turkeys at $.47 per pound. We bought a 14 pounder, some instant stuffing, and a can of cranberry sauce. That might be it for our simple Thanksgiving this year.

On the brighter side, I sighted in my rifle today and was content with my shooting after just one shot. The "perch" I've got in mind is near the top of a 50' gully. I plopped down a deck chair, cut a tree branch for a rifle support, then sawed down several saplings and small evergreens so as to improve the view. If a deer comes along while I'm in position, we'll be eating more than just a little turkey this year! Fingers are crossed.

BTW, we know the gully to have both deer and bear. The only question is when will a deer be there? I won't shoot a bear if I can help it.
