Re: “it doesn't take much of a spark or heat of any kind to ignite it causing an explosion.”
I know of more people killed by electricity than gas. One was an electrician wiring our new office. Another was the cousin of a friend, who hit a wire while digging under his house.

No decent power source is safe. Did you hear what happened in Hiroshima???

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

The real problem with natural gas or propane gas stoves is simply that if there actually was a gas leak that did occur anywhere in the line from the source to the appliance , the gas would build up and it doesn't take much of a spark or heat of any kind to ignite it causing an explosion.

That exact scenario happened to a family friend of my mother and father and who was a dear sweet older lady who was a family friend for decades.

She was blown clear out of her home's second floor window from a gas leak that had occurred in a line in the basement area and it made its way up into the kitchen.

She was blown about fifty feet out of her house and into the yard. She had complained about smelling gas to Duke Energy but they said they could not find anything wrong.

It doesn't speak well of Duke Energy but they did wind up making her a wealthy person after it was all over and she recovered from her burns and broken bones.

GAS is SAFE as long as one does a great job inspecting the lines and has a device that senses natural gas while doing so.

I personally do not use natural gas or propane for explosion hazard reasons. I only use electric for everything. My average monthly electric bill is less than 80 dollars. In winter its around 115 and spring summer and fall it is about $45-50..
Realize my home does not leak air or permit air penetration anywhere. And it faces due west.

Its something one has to really do some research and digging on but can find the very best and evaluated and tested products such as entry doors, storm doors and windows that went thru these standardized tests and see which one actually allowed the least air penetration to come thru them.

The top tested brand and model was what is on my house.
Candles do not flicker placed in front of the doors or windows.. So I stay nice and comfy all winter long and our heat stays inside the house and does not leak out when the electric goes out.. It holds it very well.

But I digress. Sorry. Like anything else, there are safety precautions and inspections that should be done without fail and on a schedule when dealing with a volatile explosive gas used in ones home. There are detectors that can be purchased as well.

So when used properly, natural gas is just fine and less expensive to use than electric although with the right home setup, not less by much on a utility bill.

I wish Ted Cruz would run for President sometime. I believe with his high intelligence and love of Country he would be an outstanding American President..
