Re: “It will be good to set them aside until the weather improves.”Speaking of the weather, we had a 10-second power outage a moment ago (2 o'clock a.m. Why are they always at night???) The outages are annoying and happen far more often at the new house than at the old one.

The resetting of clocks never ends around here! In fact, the outages prompted me to buy five LED reading-lights... the portable, rechargeable kind that clip onto a book's cover... a few days ago. One day, we're bound to get an outage that lingers. Sitting in the dark with nothing to do and nowhere to go quickly gets boring. In the months we've been here, my appreciation for electricity has soared.

For the same reason, I'm pushing my builders to expedite building of a basement fireplace hearth. Without it, we can't use the basement's wood stove... putting us at real risk of getting frozen out of house and home by a multi-day power outage. We have a hearth on the main floor, but no one is strong enough to carry a 500 lb wood stove up the stairs! I'm probably going to have to hire a professional just to move stove #2 fifty feet.

Some folks around here get by just fine using their basement's wood stove for heat and nothing else. I don't know if that will work for us and am not counting on it. Winters in New Hampshire are quite cold at times. For now, though, we don't even have a functioning basement wood stove. If the power goes out, our oil heater will stop working and we'll be seeing our breath by morning.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

We did auction pickups in three New Hampshire cities on Saturday. (Hence, the visit to that Space Force Station in New Boston, and also to a town that calls itself 'the birthplace of Horace Greeley.' Remember Horace? If not, he's the one who said, "Go west, young man!") The items were mostly trivial, many in the "art" and "hobby" categories: (autographed Elton John photos and memorabilia, a concrete frog (yes, really) sitting on an orb, nine blank canvases (would you believe the stupid things sell for $40 apiece at Staples?), a small rock collection, a Sherlock Holmes doll, a small Zipline kit, etc. Many others were in the "tool" category: Two toolchests, an electronics kit, a desktop computer (for one dollar), a heavy-duty 3-hole punch, mobile radio transceivers (on the CB band). Then there's the usual miscellaneous stuff: A 9x13 screenhouse, a cabinet's worth of office supplies, a "Hall Tree" bench for the foyer, an electric blanket.

Tomorrow, Sunday, will be more of the same. We're heading to Adams Massachusetts for a large pickup of small items.

But then we're shutting down for the winter - no more auctions until Spring. The auctions are a lot of fun, but today I noted that we're playing with fire... er... ice. What I mean is that the weather gods have been kind to us, but one of these days our luck will run out. We'll be doing a pickup when a blizzard hits. Or we'll just be unable to go out at all because of an unexpected overnight snowfall. With many of these auction houses, if you don't arrive in the 3 or 4 hours they've designated , you lose your purchases and may even be billed! Not good.

So, with winter clearly here, we're suspending it all until at least March.

It's fine, really. We have a huge number of things to do at the new house: We're still installing cabinet knobs, doorstops, towel racks, toilet paper dispensers, shelf paper. There are things to paint. Much of the barn is a terrible mess. The auctions take a huge amount of our time. It will be good to set them aside until the weather improves.
