Re: “Then again, most people really are sad and pathetic in lots of areas of their lives.”
I don't know if it's "most," but it's certainly "MANY."

clo, for instance, just bemoaned the fact that she never sees people anymore. For Thanksgiving, there were no guests - just she, her still-lives-with-mom fifty-one year-old and their massive ELEVEN POUND turkey. All she has in her life anymore is her teevee and computer. Does it get any more pathetic than that?

By all accounts, when clo was young she was pretty - (daddy's little princess) and popular (passed around like a party reefer by the boys.) The world was her oyster. But daddy left her as did her looks. Simmering resentment, particularly toward white males, became her obsession, gradually overtaking even the shocking vapidity as her principal quality. Nobody wanted her around for more than the fifteen minutes or so between introductions and throwing away the condom.

What a life! clo has nothing anymore except MSNBC and the two friends on her board - one of whom is zz! The other now goes four days between posts.

But perhaps I'm being unfair. Zimbler now posts on Pffart4. She may count him as a friend... possibly her BEST friend. And under the circumstances, who could blame her?

clo is not the only one. zz, certainly, is every bit as sad and pathetic... though no one would ever mistake him for a man-hater. (Hateful, yes, but not a MAN hater.) Between Covid and the internet, millions of Americans are in that boat: Unwillingly sad and lonely, cloistered in a solitude they neither sought nor wanted.

But in most cases, they deserve it. They did this to themselves, rejecting the good things life offers and embracing a void. (Note: clo and zz are voids that no one willingly embraces.) America has some dark times ahead.

That headline is a SAD and pathetic headline about people in general.

Then again, most people really are sad and pathetic in lots of areas of their lives.
