I've got an interesteing animal on my hands. For a while I thought he was dumb. I've had dogs that were very easy to train. One learned to sit, lie down and shake hands in a single one-hour session. Stuey is nothing like that. I've come to think that he's smart enough but mule-headed, intensely resistant to obeying commands even though he clearly understands them.

But in another way, this dog shows signs of genius. He can do things that I can't do. I've never seen an animal return to an area where ONE thing has changed and he immediately knows what that change is. I've heard of autistic people with the ability... people who can enter a room and immediately know that there's now a spoon on the chair. Well, that's him. He's very, very visual. It was he who first noticed the bald eagles overhead. He was the one who saw and began barking at the Starlink satellites - which he spotted and knew to be unusual.

Today, though, was one of the funnier incidents. I was watching 'Santa Claus 2' and he didn't seem to be paying attention. But there was a scene where a mouse went through a machine and was duplicated. It emerged from the other side and walked down a ramp. A second mouse came out of the machine and also started walking down, then jumped off the ramp. When that happened, my dog leaped over a couch and raced to the edge of the TV, trying to find the mouse on our floor. It was one of the funnies things I've ever seen an animal do. I backed up the movie and played it again. The same thing happened. When I did it a third time, my dog lost interest.

I'm guessing this has to do with his breeding. He's got webbed feet, so he's meant to swim. He looks and acts like a bird dog. And I *bet* that the visual skills are so that he can see a falling bird, then race into a bog and find it. It's a useful skill when you think about it.
