For the first time in the U.S., an inmate is set to be executed with nitrogen gas. Kenneth Eugene Smith, convicted for his role in the murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher’s wife, is being put to death in Alabama in January after a previous lethal injection attempt was called off.
But there are lingering questions about using nitrogen gas, with some details of the protocol cloaked in mystery.
