Having played BIG School in Ohio for 3 years as Varsity starter , two state titles, and almost always overmatched in terms of weight by the guy across the line from me, I know a little about the game. My brother in law was a well known college football place kicker for Woody Hayes at Ohio State. Thomas Klaban. He was the first soccer style kicker ever under Woody Hayes. I was not big enough to go play college ball as a lineman and I did not feel overly impressed to get killed by guys that outweighed me by 100 pounds.. SO, hi ho, hi ho, its off to Nam I go..

The starting QB bailed on the team and left them out to dry. He decided transferring to another lesser college program was for him.. Don't know why but he could have played this final game of the year.. That shows a lot about his character imo.

The game is a lot different in the trenches than it is out on the open field where ya can run and try to avoid getting hit . Some games ya just get the crap beat out of ya cuz the guy ya is playing against is much bigger, stronger, going to the NFL straight out of high school.
There is no running, ducking, or hiding. The "skill" players are different than the guys doing the dirty work to make them look good.

RG3 was a great athlete.. Sometimes players cannot do a thing about getting hit from a blind side and injured. So no matter how great they are, on a field with 11 people trying to hit you, eventually someone will nail you when you are not expecting it. It happens to QB's, WR's, TE's, and yes, linemen.. Nothing like a 300 pounder beating the snot out of ya all night long..

I played against the Sylvester brothers from Moeller High School in Cincy.. They were HUGE and going to Notre Dame. They spent one year at Notre Dame and then went into the NFL.. I spent my post high school time enjoying Southeast asia's finest jungles and plenty of slanty eyed people trying to kill me if the 2 step vipers didn't get me first.

So, here we are today many decades later, and what we saw was a sputtering offense because the QB who played almost all the downs for Ohio State was sitting it out and so an inexperienced backup played against a good Missouri team.

That QB that sat out let down his teammates. Yes, he is going to transfer to play at another school next season but he still needed to finish this one first.. He has no character.

Oh well. LUCK plays a huge part in a player staying healthy but as you said, RG3 was an amazing athlete as was Reggie Bush when he played.

Re: “The Buckeyes offense was terrible mainly due to having to play without its starting QB the entire game and this third stringer was his first time all year behind center.”
RG3 might have been the greatest quarterback in NFL history . . . except we'll never know since he kept getting hurt. And therefore he sucked.

Staying healthy is part of what makes a player great. The best players are more adept at avoiding hits and are better fit. Durability is every bit as important as throwing accurately, yelling the name of a midwestern city, or deciding on the right plays.
