De,
When I think of 'art like paintings' the first question I have to ask myself is "Would I like to have this on my wall?" And if the answer is 'no' I would not want to buy it.

With that said, I hope you do find a buyer for it that will pay you a LOT more than you paid for it.

Zim.

Stupider Things Bought at Auction

I participated in an auction tonight and had my azz handed to me. It was the biggest auction I've ever been on... over nine hundred lots. Things started closing at 5 p.m. and the last closed a few minutes ago around 10:30.

What went wrong? How about, I only won a single item. All that time lost. My wife and I went into this thing interested in thirty-five lots, but everything was quickly bid way, WAY up. There was a Persian carpet that sold for $3,225 - leaping over $700 in its last five minutes. A group of four Napoleon Bonaparte prints (not originals) that I passed on at $5 thinking "who would want that?" eventually sold for $370! Most items sold for several hundred dollars.

I've become accustomed to winning between a quarter and a third of the things I try for. But on this auction, there were a whole lot of people and most, apparently, had far more money than I did.

So, it was frustrating.

I even knowingly bid HIGH on one item. My niece is getting married and I found a really nice painting called "Beautiful Morning." Not only was it nice, but the title was appropriate for her new life. I wanted that sucker and bid a lot more than I should have. I still didn't get it. %@#$!

The one and only win was this painting to the right. It wasn't even something I'd planned to buy. I don't really care for it. But midway through the auction, when it was clear that I wasn't winning a single thing, I spotted this underpriced antique oil painting. My wife disliked it even more than I did. But we did some quick research and saw that John H. Witt is a known artist. I decided to bid on it even though it does nothing for me. It was only $75 at the time and I thought it must be worth more than that. It's likely from the 19th Century. So we bid. Someone outbid us. And we then won it for $86. The auction house charges a 20% premium, so it came to $103.20.

Following the auction, I did a bit more looking and actually found it online from a 2022 auction. I'm not sure how it managed to get auctioned twice in two years... maybe nobody bought it the first time. But I did like the estimated value.

If you go to Ebay, or
click here, you can find other works by Witt. Most are for sale in the $1,000 - $4,000 range.
